Moderne “Buchhandlungen” sollten gemieden werden, wenn man tatsächlich an Literatur oder Fachbüchern interessiert ist, und einem außerdem sein geistiges Wohlbefinden am Herzen liegt.

In den 10 Prozent der Ladenfläche, die tatsächlich von Bücherregalen eingenommen wird (meist sind es nur die Wände), gibt es allein 30 Prozent Selbsthilfebücher, deren Inhalt so unglaublich trivial oder idiotisch ist, dass man diesen Teil gedruckter Werke direkt ins Altpapier sortieren könnte. Ein paar kostenlose Tipps: Wie wird man glücklich? Gar nicht. Aber es wird meist tolerabler, wenn man Arbeit reduziert und nicht mehr nach Besitztuermern und Status strebt. Wie nehme ich ab? Deutlich unter Tagesbedarf essen, elektrolyte nicht vergessen. Simple as. Wie komme ich in meiner Karriere weiter? Glück haben und/oder Arschkriechen.

Zehn Prozent gehen für spirituelle Ratgeber drauf, in denen man erklärt bekommt, wie man Kristalle auflädt, die Chakren energetisiert und seine Aura verstärkt. Diese Kategorie an Büchern kann auch getrost entsorgt werden. OH MY HECKIN SCIENCE, JEDES BUCH IST WERTVOLL!!!

Danach 10 Prozent Biografien irgendwelcher Z-Promis und literally whos. Dann ein nicht unbeträchtlicher Teil politischer “Analysen”, bei der zwischen Realität, Fiktion und Propaganda nicht wirklich unterschieden werden kann. Normalerweise sind es nur Titel, die in den aktuellen Status Quo passen und cover haben die den größten youtube clickbait thumbnails konkurrenz machen. Schwarzes cover, weißer titel: “Russische Hacker: Wie der Kreml die Demokratie von innen zerstört”, oder “Zeitbombe China”. Rote Unterüberschrift: “Ein Einblick in die Hybride Kriegsführung der Trolls”, “Wie Chinas Wirtschaft in zwei Wochen implodieren wird”, darunter natürlich ein gefadetes Schwarzweißfoto von Putin und Xi. Das Farbschema nur durchbrochen durch den “SPIEGEL Bestseller” Sticker, der sich nicht rückstandslos entfernen lässt, oder inzwischen aufgedruckt ist. (Die Erstauflagen hatten diesen Sticker auch schon) Werke zu politischer Theorie gibt es nicht.

Dann die (immer gleichen) Romane, unter denen sich selten aber auch ein paar gute befinden.

Fachbücher sucht man in den meisten Buchhandlungen vergeblich (mit seltenen Ausnahmen), als Ersatz gibt es Pop Soyence Werke zu Quantenphysik und Psychologie. Im Bereich Philosophie le epic Marcus Aurelius und gesammelte, aus dem Kontext gerissene Zitate verschiedener, als wichtig betitelter “Denker”.

Selbstverständlich das neueste 700 Seiten “Windows 11” Buch für Boomer, dazu aus irgendeinem Grund immer noch ein Buch zu PHP, hauptsache nichts Sinnvolles. Ich habe noch nie das SICP in einer Buchhandlung gesehen.

Englische Literatur ist kaum vertreten, klassicher Literatur wird ein kleines Regal gewidmet. Wenn Reclam nicht existieren würde, gäbe es dieses vermutlich gar nicht.

Die Cover der Bücher versuchen alle reißerisch und auffällig auszusehen, da sie sich sonst nicht verkaufen: Bunt, Bilder direkt auf den Einband gedruckt, keine Umschläge, die Buchgrößen alle nonstandart.

Dort Bücher Bestellen lohnt sich auch nicht, weil die meisten Großhändler nur Müll im Lager haben, für den Unzählige Bäume sterben mussten. Wenn man ein Fachbuch haben möchte, dass nicht von Thieme oder Oxford University Press verlegt wurde, gibt es das immerhin bei Amazon.

Nun genug mit Büchern, es ist schließlich eine Buchhandlung. Die anderen 90 Prozent der Fläche werden entweder gar nicht genutzt, oder für die Anpreisung tangential relevanter Konsumprodukte. Harry Potter Zauberstäbe, Funko Pops, Fanartikel, e-reader und anderer Plastikmüll. Grim.

Der Kapitalismus hat Bücher endgültig getötet, man meide die Buchhandlung, denn was will man dort? Den absolut kleinsten gemeinsamen Nenner des geschriebenen Wortes? Oder als “dark academia” booktoktard LARPEN? SAD! Many such cases!

"""Artist""" seething

There’s a lot of critique out there about the use of LLMs and GAI. Some of it more relevant, some underdiscussed and some plain hilarious. All this is worth a proper article on its own, but I wanted to share a quick thought on the meltdowns of self proclaimed “artists”.

Generative AI has made a lot of “artists” extremely angry. They are seething about being replaced by machines who have no “soul” and create “soulless slop”. Interestingly, it shows that even machine slop can replace their “art”, as it was never about the quality or creativity behind their work, but the mere fact that there was no other option, apart from using stock footage, to hire an “artist” to create the work for them. Corporations do not care, nor does the general public, which is a problem, but still.

Now that GAI models are powerful enough to create those illustrations based on a simple prompt and a budget of 3 USD and 10 minutes of time, there is little justification to pay an “artist” 200 USD to create the same corporate slop the machine can produce. It’s not like those “artists” were virtuosos, creating art of utmost quality and soul representing the depths and nuances of human existence, but rather slop out illustrations based on corporate guidelines, who by their very nature are anti human.

It is so funny to me that these people consider themselves artists, when all they do is sell their commodified illustrations. I hold the belief that everything can be art, as long as it is not created for (monetary or similar) profit, but rather through suffering of various kinds including the urge to create something, or for arts cause. Selling your services as an “artist” to a corporation to be used to manipulate the public for profit is nothing that deserves the title of “artist”, but what it is: a contractor.

These contractors will claim that “art is dead”, which is funny firstly because they reduce art to their capitalist slop which paid their rent, and secondly, because the majority of the “art” they created was already dead. They were just like the machines they so despise. They were given a prompt containing style, “corporate identity” and other constraints and subsequently created their “artwork”, leaving little room for creativity. The rest was mostly shitty simplistic logo designs a three year could come up with, plus proper proportions. If we want to give this current slop movement a name containing the word art, it wouldn’t be “dead art”, but a necromantic simulacrum That word again, but it fits so well for many things of art. I don’t know how one can be so proud of creating shitty corpo artstyle illustrations used to not overwhelm the reader with too much text and dehumanize them.

Lastly it should be said that all this in itself is a great piece of involuntary performance art and I can’t help but admire this picture of ignorance and all the gnashing of teeth. I hope the seething will continue and a lesson be learned.

Open Source Delusions

Open source is a gift to HUMANFOLKS, writing software in your spare time for billion dollar corporations to use for free is a GIFT TO ALL Humans/HuXer’s. If you don’t do this you are against FREEDOM. Educate yourself! I will now have to rewriiiite the latest useless tool in overengineered Rust and open source it using MIT loicense.

People who use windows and complain about it, but refuse to learn *NIX deserve every bit of suffering M$ tries to inflict on them. If you are too lazy to change and learn something, then the problem can’t be that bad. It would take you two hours to learn everything to get a working setup, and a few days until you know how to do most things. If that isn’t worth it to you, stop complaining, you lost all right to do so by being lazy.

If you actually used NIX in its proper form, without a DE and all the associated bloat, you would see that this way of computing is very natural and simple in comparison to wind*ws. Tell the computer what to do and it does it for you. List me all files in the current directory (folder): ls. Switch to dir called ‘sneed’: cd sneed. Copy the file ‘based.png’ to dir ‘Pictures’: cp based.png Pictures/. Copy all jpeg files to pictures: cp *.jpg Pictures/. Delete all files where the filename contains the string ‘cringe’: rm *cringe*. Count the number of jpeg files in the current dir: ls *.jpg | wc -l. Check the weather: curl wttr.in. If you can’t learn this, you may want to see a doctor. It’s not complicated. If you tell someone to hand you the pepper at the dinner table, you also tell them “please hand me the pepper”.

You will have to remember like 10 commands. If you forgot how to use one of them, do man <command>, for example man ls to get the manual for the list (ls) command. Just don’t forget man.

So stop complaining about windows or start using an alternative operating system that isn’t macos.

And if you decided to switch and got your feet wet, decide for a proper text editor (vim) and write your documents in LaTeX or Typst. Don’t use systemd and don’t use pulseaudio. Don’t forget to smash that like button and share my website or however the burger is flipped.

Grabkerze

Ich gehe fast immer nachts spazieren, meist erst über den Friedhof und dann in den Wald. Es ist immer schön, die Kerzen an den Gräbern leuchten zu sehen. Allerdings sind drei viertel dieser “Kerzen” eigentlich LED-Leuchten in Form einer Grabkerze.

Ich finde das prinzipiell extrem lieblos. Wenn die einzige Idee hinter einer Grabkerze das Erleuchten des Grabes ist, dann muss die Leuchte nicht diese Form haben. Wenn jemand kein Geld für echte Grabkerzen hat, ebenso.

Diese Gründe mal außer Acht gelassen, stellen wir uns nun vor, wir seien LED-Grabkerzenverkäufer und laufen von Tür zu Tür um unser Produkt zu bewerben. Was wäre hier das Verkaufsargument? Mit dieser Kerze aus irgendeinem Sweatshop in Ostasien können Sie echtes Kerzenlich emulieren, müssen nie wieder eine echte Grabkerze kaufen (Nachhaltigkeit) und auch nie wieder Ihre verstorbenen besuchen! (Zeitersparnis)

Diesem Simulacrum einer Kerze fehlt jede Eigenschaft die sie in dem Kontext ausmacht. Kein Aufwand das Grab zu besuchen um eine neue Kerze vorbei zu bringen. Kein Zeichen dass dieses Grab besucht wurde. Keine Wärme durch echtes Feuer, nichts als ein postindustrielles Artefakt, das die oberflächlichste Eigenschaft einer Kerze imitiert. Es leuchtet und flackert, selbst auf völlig verwahrlosten Gräbern.
